Erskine Hawkins, surnommé "The 20th Century Gabriel", enregistre de 1936 à 1945.

Fats Waller and his Rhythm

Son orchestre remanié "The First Herd" joue le morceau Blues in the Night (My Mama Done Tol' Me) qui est n°1 aux États-Unis en février 1942.

Grab your coat and get your hat
Leave your worry on the doorstep
Just direct your feet
On the sunny side of the street
Can't you hear a pitter-pat
And that happy tune is your step
Life can be so sweet
On the sunny side of the street
I used to walk in the shade
With those blues on parade
But now I’m not afraid
This rover crossed over
If I'd never have a cent
I'd be rich as Rockefeller
Going to set my feet
On the sunny side of the street
